Our transition programme begins long before students join us in Year 7. We work in close partnership with our feeder primary schools, including our seven Catholic partner schools, to ensure every child is known as an individual and receives the support they need for a successful start. Throughout the year, our staff visit primary schools, meet with teachers, work alongside families and gather a detailed understanding of each student’s strengths, interests and any additional support they may need. This enables us to create a personalised experience that helps every child settle quickly, make new friendships and thrive from their very first day. Our extensive transition programme includes: • Open Evening for prospective families • Visits to our partner primary schools • Cross-phase meetings between primary and secondary staff • Transition Evening for parents and students • Two full Transition Days, allowing students to experience life at Thornleigh • Enhanced transition activities for students requiring additional support • Opportunities to meet key staff, tutors and fellow students before September • Ongoing support throughout Year 7 to ensure every student continues to flourish academically, socially and spiritually We believe transition is not simply an event in the summer term, but a journey that begins well before students arrive and continues throughout their first year. PRAYER AND LITURGY Prayer and Liturgy are at the core of our life at Thornleigh. They are central to our mission of Encounter, Accompaniment, Formation and Mission. They provide opportunities for our whole community to reflect, give thanks, celebrate and grow together. Each school day is punctuated by three shared moments of prayer: morning prayer, grace before lunch and an end of day prayer. These simple but consistent acts of worship invite each member of our school community to pause, reflect and give thanks for God’s presence. Alongside these daily prayers, every year group gathers in our chapel twice each half term for a Celebration of the Word, providing opportunities for deeper reflection led by students and school leadership. Throughout the year, Eucharistic celebrations around the feast days of our school saints take place helping students to deepen their understanding of their tutor group saint and celebrate our Salesian Spirit. Particularly on the feast of St John Bosco. The academic year culminates in Salesian Week, when our whole community celebrates the gifts, achievements and service of our students and staff. Salesian Week brings together everything we seek to foster throughout the year: a community of joy, gratitude, belonging and mission. At Thornleigh Salesian College, personal development is central to everything we do and is rooted in our Salesian ethos and RUAH values. We equip every student with the character, skills and confidence to contribute positively to the wider society. For students to be successful they need to be safe, happy and well supported. We promote positive mental health and wellbeing throughout the support mechanisms of the Care, Guidance and Support Teams and our Chaplaincy Provision. Each year group is divided into ten form groups and the form tutor is the first point of contact for all students. These form groups are led by a team of year leaders who co-ordinate their work. Our school chaplain guides students through their spiritual journey in school, celebrating and educating them about our Catholic Salesian ethos. Our Safeguarding Team ensure that all students feel safe and supported whilst promoting their resilience. Students with SEND are supported through our Learning Support and Inclusion Team. We have a team of Higher Level Teaching Assistants who support the learning of students by ensuring they can have a full and equitable access to the curriculum.
