Spring Newsletter 2024

432 SPRING NEWSLETTER 2024 This term has been a busy one for Curriculum for Life. We have continued to address important issues through their taught sessions, as well as through the assembly programme. We have had different people come into school to present to year groups in assemblies, such as representatives from both MHST and Kooth and speakers from the Manchester Lieutenancy. Year 9 have participated in the Honours Programme. The Manchester Lieutenancy is composed of men and women who have given significant public service in one form or another. The Honours Programme is a way to raise awareness of the Honours System in the UK and is described as a ‘great example of British Values in action.’ Our students had two sessions where they learnt about the Honours System, they listened to people who have achieved honours speak in assemblies and they worked in groups to create their own nominations. Our students engaged enthusiastically with the programme, and showed a genuine interest in the speakers who visited. The intention is that they understand the system and will, one day, nominate someone they know who demonstrates British Values in their life. They may also consider what actions they can do to contribute positively to society and be nominated one day themselves. Our first speaker from the Honours Programme was Saeed Atcha MBE DL. He is the Founding CEO of Youth Leads UK, a charity he established at the age of 15. Having grown up in care in Bolton, Saeed is acutely aware of how young people from disadvantaged backgrounds can be overlooked when it comes to learning valuable life skills and having a voice in their future. Saeed was the youngest person on Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year’s Honours List in 2019 awarded an MBE for services to young people and community in Greater Manchester. We ended our Honours Programme work with a presentation from Steve Mugurik CBE.QFSM.DL who was himself a student of Thornleigh Salesian College. After leaving Thornleigh he joined the Fire and Rescue Service. As a Board member of the Chief Fire Officers Association, Steve led on Equality matters. He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1996, the Queen’s Fire Service Medal in 2002, and a CBE in 2005. As a Catholic school, we follow the TenTen Life to the Full programme when teaching Relationship and Sex Education (RSE). As mentioned during each year group’s IAG, there is a Parental Portal for all parents who wish to support the programme at home. It contains an overview of the programme, guidance for parents on the content of lessons and activities that can be undertaken at home to support the delivery of the programme. If you need a reminder of the parental portal login details, please just email. Curriculum for Life
