Centenary Opening Mass

Celebrating 100 Years of Thornleigh Salesian College
On Friday 26th September, the Thornleigh community came together for the Centenary Opening Mass, a truly historic moment in our school’s journey. The celebration began at 6.30pm in the Sports Hall, which was filled with past pupils, Salesian Co-operators, Salesians from across the country, local clergy and parishioners from our surrounding communities.
We were honoured to welcome Bishop John Arnold, who presided over the Mass, alongside Fr Gerry Briody, Provincial of the Salesians in GBR. The presence of Salesian priests and brothers from every community across the country reflected the depth of the Salesian mission in the UK.
Mrs Parkinson opened the evening with words of welcome, highlighting how the Salesian mission has transformed this part of the world over the last 100 years. She also offered a special word of thanks to Mr Frank Carter, aged 98, is the oldest of the past pupils from the school, who joined us with his family for the celebration. Another remarkable moment was the presence of Fr Bob Coupe, aged 96, who is the oldest Salesian to be present as past pupil and joined in the concelebration of the Mass.
The celebration was made especially prayerful and joyful with the beautiful music provided by the Thornleigh Choir.
At the conclusion of Mass, Fr Gerry offered words of gratitude to all who contributed to the celebration. The evening continued with a wonderful programme of student-led entertainment, featuring music from the band and lively dance performances. Ms Rigby and team led the hospitality in sharing the joy on occasion with pasties and prosecco. We are also grateful to Carrs Pasties and Eventura for generously sponsoring part of the event, ensuring the evening was a memorable beginning to our Centenary Celebrations.
It was truly an amazing experience to open this milestone year in prayer, community and thanksgiving. Grateful for all those who joined us on the celebration mass. Look out for more events during the centenary year.
