Year 11 Celebration Mass

On Tuesday 29th April we celebrated our Year 11 Celebration Mass and presentation of school awards. It was a wonderful occasion, which saw the school Chapel filled with students and their families, coming together to send our Year 11 students prayerfully into their final exams and beyond.
In his homily Fr Steven Lloyd SDB reminded the students that they always have a home here at Thornleigh, and encouraged them to use the talents and skills they have nurtured here to make the world a better place for all:
“Remember this: the world often tells us that success is about being the smartest, the fastest, the loudest. But today’s Gospel reminds us: God reveals His wisdom not to the “wise and clever” - but to those who are open, humble, and ready to trust. The world needs your light. It needs your kindness, your courage, your patience - gifts that Thornleigh has helped you to grow.”
During the Mass each student was presented with an olive wood holding cross engraved with our school badge, and a copy of 'Trust the Road', a special book of reflections, guidance and prayers from our Salesian tradition. The crosses were hand crafted by artisans from the small Christian minority in Bethlehem. They are designed to fit comfortably in the palm. It is not meant to be worn or displayed, but held during prayer or quiet moments. We hope that it will be a symbol of comfort, strength, and God’s presence as our students journey into the next chapter of their lives.
Congratulations to the winners of the school awards:
Louis E was awarded the Mugan Shield, presented annually to a student who has made an outstanding contribution to the sporting life of Thornleigh. In their presentation speech, Heads of Year 11, Mr Whitehead and Miss Halligan, said:
“Louis has not only thrown himself into every opportunity available here at school, but has also achieved incredible success beyond it. Most recently, his talent and hard work were recognised at a national level when he was selected to represent Wales - a phenomenal achievement and a moment of immense pride for all of us. It’s rare to come across someone so consistently committed, humble in their achievements, and genuinely passionate about the power of sport to bring people together.”
The Caritas Catholic Social Teaching Award was presented to Alfie R and Alfie K, in recognition of their fundraising efforts for the Year 11 charity, ‘Andy’s Man Club’. They organised a talent showcase for Year 11 students and staff to participate, bringing the community together to raise money and awareness of men’s mental health:
“It wasn’t just about the money raised - it was about the message behind the event. By hosting a talent show in support of Andy’s Man Club, they helped raise awareness for mental health and gave us all an opportunity to come together for a common cause. They’ve shown us that even a bit of fun and creativity can make a significant impact.”
Finally the Slupski Award is awarded each year to the student who embodies the spirit and values of Thornleigh Salesian College. We were proud to present this award this year to Iman B:
“Iman has made significant contributions to our school in numerous ways. From her roles in student council, student leadership, and peer mentoring, to volunteering at after-school events and even participating in youth parliament, she has been a constant and positive presence in our school community. Her involvement is a testament to her deep sense of responsibility, her leadership abilities, and her commitment to making Thornleigh a better place for everyone. It has been a true pleasure to watch Iman blossom into the strong, intelligent, and inspiring young woman she is today. She has shown us what it means to be both kind and resilient, and her example will undoubtedly continue to inspire us all for years to come.”
At the end of his homily, Fr Steven reminded us of the famous phrase of St Catherine of Siena, whose feast we celebrated:
“Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire.”
That’s my prayer for you. Be yourselves. Stay rooted in God’s love. And wherever life leads you, know that you are never alone - Christ walks with you, and this community is always cheering you on.”
