Summer Newsletter 2022

19527 SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2022 CRICKET We have also welcomed the return of cricket this season after two summers without it and we have hit the ground running. We have had consistent good numbers at cricket practice every Monday night, especially from Year 7 and Year 8. Our Year 7 and Year 8 combined team have enjoyed a very successful season and have made it through to the Bolton Cup Final and the Lancashire Plate Semi-Final in their first year of cricket for Thornleigh. O ur Year 9 side lacked a bit of experience and crashed out of the cup at the first attempt but the Year 10 team also made it to their Bolton Cup Semi-Final, as well as enjoying a couple of wins in the Lancashire Cup along the way. We would like to say a big thank you to Heaton Cricket Club and Darcy Lever Cricket Club who have been extremely hospitable this season in hosting fixtures for us - it wouldn’t be possible without them. GIRLS CRICKET The girls have also had the opportunity to attend cricket practices this year. It has been great to see some students who don’t attend other extra-curricular practices and see them make the most of this opportunity. Many who have attended have had little to no experience of cricket so everyone has been learning together. We practiced throughout the term and worked towards a friendly game against Bolton School who again had little experience in cricket. We took 2 teams to Bolton School and came away with one win. This was a great chance for the students to put into practice everything we had been working on and it was brilliant to see everyone enjoy playing and encouraging each other and those on the opposing team - with two of our players ending up playing for Bolton School to make up numbers. It was certainly a highlight for everyone involved, we look forward to taking part in more friendly’s next summer. GREATER MANCHESTER SCHOOLS ATHLETICS Each year, the best students in Bolton represent their town at the Greater Manchester Schools Athletics Championships, something you need to achieve a tough qualifying standard for. We had 4 students this year who had achieved the standard in their events whilst competing for school in other athletics competitions. Three of these boys from 10 hadn’t competed at such a big and important athletics event before but they didn’t let it affect their performance, with a 6th place in the 100m final, 3rd place in shot put and a brilliant win in the triple jump. It was a fantastic achievement to get the qualifying standard for their respective event to be able to enter this competition so well done to all four boys!
