Summer Newsletter 2022
523 SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2022 THE TURING SCHEME – YEAR 9 AND 10 - OUR WEEK IN MIAMI “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing”, Walt Disney. The Turing Scheme allowed us to develop our understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in ways we couldn’t imagine, such as our trip to Miami. Whilst in Miami, we had many opportunities to develop our knowledge on the SDGs, for example: • Floating Classroom and Beach Clean • Barnacle State Park • Wynwood Walls D ay 1 On our first day In Miami, we woke up bright and early and went on a walk to a local retail park where we got pizza for lunch and spent some time in the supermarket. On our way back to our accommodation, it thunder stormed, and we were stranded inside of the supermarket. Our first day in Miami was a relaxed one as we were all tired from the long flight the night previous! Day 2 On our second day In Miami was another early start, we got on a coach to Barnacle State Park where we ate our sandwiches, admired the view and learned about Ralph Middleton Munroe and his house which he built entirely out of driftwood, lifted with train winches and expanded underneath! We then walked to the metro mover station where we got a carriage to a shopping mall where we ate and bought souvenirs. Wh ilst walking to the metro mover through Coconut Grove, we took a glimpse at a less developed and money deprived neighbourhood. W e could tell as soon as we walked into this area that it was deprived as there were animals wandering the streets, smashed up cars and apartments. Da y 3 On day 3 in Miami, we took a trip to Wynwood Walls! The Wynwood Walls is one of the main attractions in Miami and is a massive canvas of graffiti work, some pieces with meaningful messages behind them. W e then got the metromover to downtown Miami where we had a look in the shops inside of the Miami heat arena. We walked along the sustainable park and sat by the ocean. D ay 4 On day 4, we got up very early, ready for the coach which turned up an hour late! When the coach eventually arrived, we journeyed down to visit the SeaKeepers and Blue Scholars. We took part in the floating classroom with the Blue Scholars and in a beach clean-up with the SeaKeepers. It was an educating and exciting experience for us all. In the evening, we went to a baseball game and watched the Miami Marlins! #Sanchez7 D ay 5 On the fifth day in Miami, we went on an airboat in the Everglades. Here we saw crocodiles and alligators. Th e Everglades is the only place on the planet where crocodiles and alligators coexist. It is home to many endangered species. After our amazing airboat tour of the Everglades, we went to Dolphin shopping mall where we spent the last of our free time. Day 5 was also an exciting and fun filled day. Da y 6 On the final day of our Miami trip, we all made sure to sun cream and headed to Miami beach! We spent the day on the beach and in the ocean, there were lots of tiny fish swimming up to our feet on the shore line. W e finished the day by heading back to our accommodation on the coach and headed to the retail park where we ate at JJ’s Wings! We all tucked into a buffet of chicken wings and nachos, with a veggie and vegan option too. Summary To summarise our trip to Miami, we made many links with companies and organisations with the same common goal as us which we are hoping to further collaborate with and use to implement the ideas and actions they put into place into our school and our society as a whole. Th e SeaKeepers Society and Blue Scholars have bases in London who have mentioned collaborating with us in the future. By Lydia B and Jacob K
