Summer Newsletter 2022
422 SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2022 MFL Follow us @tsc_mfl_dep A MESSAGE FROM MFL... We would like to congratulate all of our students for their hard work and persistence in Spanish this year. The students have continued to work hard in their online “deberes” and vocabulary quizzes throughout the year. The “ deberes” quizzes consist of 10 short questions which consolidate vocabulary and grammatical structures which we have seen in class. Year 7 have been studying all about endangered species including the Galapagos Island turtles – linking to the Sustainable Development Goals 14 and 15 Life Below Water and Life on Land, as well as the topic of school. O ur Year 8s have enjoyed learning about Hispanic culture and festivals and Free Time and our Year 9s have embraced the topic of relationships. Year 10s have continued to work hard throughout the GCSE topics, preparing themselves for next year. We are beginning our preparations to celebrate Language Week when we return in September and we are hoping that many will join in our annual “Communicake” competition. W e also hope for the return of our ever-popular trip to La Salsa restaurant, which gives students a taste of Spain in Bolton and always leaves us all with full bellies! ¡B uena suerte! to all of our leavers this year; we wish you all the best in the future. T o our current students; we cannot wait to welcome you back in September. Have a lovely rest and stay safe. INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS AWARD Well what a fabulous year we have had engaging in international projects in many subject areas. We have had the successful first year of the Creative I-Media project with Paris and we cannot wait to see how this develops next year. We have had the International Climate Action Network meetings with Hungary, France and Italy. Some of our Year 7 students even wrote letters to the school in France about their thoughts on Climate Change. We have had the 2 successful art projects, Rivers of the World and Rivers of Hope where the last one saw our student’s work being displayed as a silk scarf in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Parade. O ur Turing Scheme has gone from strength to strength, following our successful bid of just over £155,000, we have been able to support some of our students in going on their first ever visit abroad, whether that was Gibraltar with the Sixth Form in April, Miami with the Year 9 and 10s in June or Gibraltar again with the Years 7 and 8 in July. All these trips took place following a tough selection process of the hundreds of entries that we received. We have begun to forge some strong links with our international partners such as the Nautilus Project in Gibraltar Th e Nautilus Project has been delivering environmental initiatives since they opened officially in 2016. Th eir goal is to provide a superior learning experience of the Gibraltar marine environment for their community. They aim to improve awareness of environmental issues through learning at schools or in small private groups. Le wis Stagnetto has decades of experience in Marine Biology and is passionate about exceeding expectations. Their catch, learn and release (CLR) strategy will ensure that the students leave with great memories and unique experiences. We are excited about our new partnership with the Blue Scholars and the International SeaKeepers whom we met in Miami. Th e Blue Scholars specialise in Marine Ecology, Marine Biology and watershed concepts to provide a more in depth understanding on how human stress impacts the oceans wildlife and living creatures. We tested the water PH, turbidity and dissolved oxygen and looked at what impacts these factors. Th e International SeaKeepers Society is a non-profit organisation which work together in teams all over the globe to ‘Research. Educate. Protect and Restore.’ They help preserve marine life and strive to keep the oceans clean by utilizing privately owned yachts as platforms for ocean research. We helped clean the beach and made a board on why the oceans are so important. Not to mention our new links with the Atrato River Guardians in Colombia and the Salesian schools over there as well as our connections with environmental organisations in many other areas of the world. W e have also applied for the reaccreditation of our International Schools Award that we achieved back in 2019. W e are extremely proud to announce that following another successful bid we have secured funding to subsidise further trips next year to Sweden for Years 9 and 10, Gibraltar for Years 7 and 8 and Colombia for Year 11, 12 and 13.
