Easter Newsletter 2022
5 SPRING NEWSLETTER 2022 RE Follow us @tsc_re MARK’S GOSPEL During the Spring term, our Year 9 students have embarked on a discovery of Mark’s Gospel. On receiving their own personal copies of the Gospel from Eden, students first learned how to find a Gospel reference. Once the students were confident with this, we used them every lesson for studying the life, the teachings, the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In class, students used the Gospel academically. They read the passages and then begin analysing it’s meaning and significance. The students identify new or key words in the passage, they annotate it with key information and meanings. The y summarise the passage detailing what they have learnt and have regular opportunities to read aloud. They use the Gospel in order to add sources of wisdom and authority to their written classwork, in preparation for their GCSE in Religious Studies. At home, the students use their Gospels to read and study independently. They will reflect on the message and meaning individually, then bring all their thoughts to class the following lesson. Having individual Gospels has made it possible for all our students to be able to do this at home. One way we have used the Mark’s Gospel within the RE department this term is for meditation. The students have their own Gospel in their hands. The teacher will then read a passage while the students hear the Word of God. They reflect on the passage and we end our meditation with a prayer. This has proven to be a popular way to use the Gospels with our students. Ms Dallas, RE teacher, states, “My Year 9 classes every year love using the Mark’s Gospels. They enjoy reading from it and analysing each of the passages we study. They thoroughly enjoyed the meditation exercise with some students reporting they could more easily picture the scene and feel the emotions of the people in the passage. They felt the fear of the apostles during the Calming of the Storm.” Fr eya, Year 9 student, said that she liked to use the Gospel of Mark as it tells her how people lived at the time of Jesus. RECONCILIATION This term our Year 7, 8 and 9 students have had the opportunity to take part in the sacrament of reconciliation. All our students prepared for this in class and then visited our Chapel where they spent time reflecting on our own lives and the lives of others. They considered the importance of forgiveness and helping others especially in today’s world. Whilst in Chapel students also had the chance to write a prayer or a letter to someone in Ukraine suffering from the current conflicts there. DON BOSCO DAY In RE we celebrated Don Bosco day using the theme of inclusion. All our KS3 classes explored what inclusion means and how we can try to show inclusion in our lives today. Our students then created a fantastic display to show what gifts and talents they had and how they were going to use these to include everyone in school. Thank you to all our students who worked so hard to create a great display in RE. LENT LOVE HEARTS During our Lenten period our Year 7 students have been exploring the theme of love and kindness to others. To do this our students explored the Gospel passages of Maundy Thursday and how Jesus showed kindness to others and taught that everyone deserves to be treated equally. Our students then created their own kindness hearts to show what they are going to do to show kindness towards others during this Lenten season.
