Easter Newsletter 2022
529 SPRING NEWSLETTER 2022 MEDICAL SOCIETY Our Medical Society leadership team, Shakira, Phoebe and Shaniqua, have been busy planning and delivering a range of MedSoc sessions this term. In t heir own words: “Some for fun and some to prepare us for our next steps at applying for university. We have each taken on different roles in leading the session each week. To pics such as childhood trauma, information about UCAS, how to ace an interview, the four pillars of medical ethics, quizzes and even a suturing session on fruits! Many more exciting things are planned for the coming weeks like First Aid training, teaching everyone basic sign language, developing essential research skills and assigning group projects that students will present themselves. All of these activities are hoping to put our members in the best position possible for their next steps! CHARITY WALKS Some of our Sixth Formers have braved the weather conditions and participated in monthly 8k sponsored walks to raise funds and awareness of charities including CAFOD and Brain Tumour Research, led by our very own walk leader, Nathan T in Year 13. W e look forward to organising more sponsored walks next term to release some more endorphins and to raise such much needed funds for worthy charities. SIGN LANGUAGE What Anthony in Year 13 had to say: “For the first block of enrichment activities I chose sign language as I believe it’s a key skill to have – I feel we should adapt to the Deaf community and not the other way around. We learnt the basics such as the alphabet, names, dates, numbers and more. Therefore, I jumped at the next opportunity to learn more sign language and develop my skills. As of now the sign language students and I can introduce ourselves, talk about our preferences, introduce family members, have basic conversations and even “sing” Christmas songs. Th is has been an enlightening course and I can’t wait to learn more; if everyone knew what we knew currently, our community would be a far more inclusive environment! If the opportunity arises where we can gain an official qualification in sign language, I believe it would benefit us greatly and I’m excited for what the future holds”. SOCIAL SCIENCE TRIP TO CHESTER ZOO Some of our Year 12 Social Science students will be attending an enrichment trip to Chester Zoo. St udents will attend a workshop delivered by an ethologist on primate behaviour and they will have the chance to develop their knowledge of non-human species and apply their theoretical knowledge to a practical setting. St udents will also have free time to fully explore the zoo animals! CHESS AND STRATEGY CLUB Our Chess and Strategy Club members continue to enjoy challenging their peers and developing their logic and strategy skills each week. Stud ents will be challenging each other to a Rubik’s cube contest this half-term! CATENIAN PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION We are so proud of Jonathan in Year 13 who represented Thornleigh at the Catenian Public Speaking Competition in February and secured 3rd place! Jonath an’s speech on the topic of “I disagree with everything you say but I will defend your right to say it”, was insightful, articulate and delivered with confidence. He wowed the judges with his performance! A h uge well done to him and his fellow competitors.
