Easter Newsletter 2022
426 SPRING NEWSLETTER 2022 OXBRIDGE ASPIRATION MORNING A group of our Year 12 students took a trip to Rivington and Blackrod High School on Friday 11th March. The event was delivered by representatives from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge and were aimed at students who would be making a competitive application. T his interactive session explored courses and university choices and outlined how to effectively undertake supercurricular exploration. Our students left with greater confidence and knowledge regarding their abilities and making informed choices. Follow us @TSC_SixthForm INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY On Monday 7th March, three of our Year 12 students and three of our future Sixth Formers who are in Year 11 spent the day at Network Plus in Worsley. The event was put on to celebrate International Women’s Day and was a positive introduction to the unseen world of construction and engineering to encourage more females to consider a career in this industry. During the day, our students had a tour of the building, did some work shadowing and did some interview role play. The girls said afterwards: “Today was such an eye-opening day. I learnt so much about the construction industry and what goes on behind the scenes and how a career path can come from anywhere and go in amazing and unexpected directions” (Amelia, Year 11) “I had learnt many surprising things. Such as the vast number of jobs which are all needed in order to successfully carry out the engineering work we see from the outside. I also learnt that there is a job at Network Plus for everyone! No job is belittled either. Fina lly, the fact that people are hired due to their personality rather than their experience surprised me.” (Nikita, Year 12) INTERVIEWS We have been busy interviewing Year 11’s across Bolton for our new September intake. We’ve been so impressed with the calibre of students that we’ve spoken to both in our own Year 11, but also during our external interviews. We can’t wait to meet everyone properly in September! ELEVATE As part of their on-going exam preparation, our Year 13 students had some hour long study skills sessions delivered by an external company called Elevate. The pr esenters were university students themselves. They delivered two relatable sessions on ‘Acing Your Exams’ and ‘Memory Mnemonics’. Ou r students were really positive about the tools and strategies that were recommended to them to try. READER’S PROGRAMME A small group of our Year 12 and 13 students have been meeting weekly with some of our Year 8 students during tutor time as part of a reader’s programme. Ou r Year 12’s have been paired up with a Year 8 student and have been listening to them read some pages from a book of their choice. Examples of the books being read are Jungle Crash by Simon Chapman and Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. Our Y ear 12’s are excited to continue with this project and developing these relationships further especially as they are seeing the younger students making good progress.
