Easter Newsletter 2022

523 SPRING NEWSLETTER 2022 SCHOOL GAMES This year has seen 26 Year 9 Sports Leaders and 11 Sixth Form students studying with LLS, lead, officiate and deliver at a number of primary school competitions and festivals, through the Bolton School Games programme (hosted by Thornleigh). Due to their enthusiastic approach and fantastic delivery skills, some have gone on to lead at the Greater Manchester Finals supporting Bolton Wanderers in the Community and Panathlon (a disability sports charity). SPORTS LEADERS Thornleigh’s Bolton School Games Organiser, Mrs O’Hare has been successful in becoming the town’s Strategic Lead for Girls’ Football in Schools, making Thornleigh the Hub Site for the partnership with England Football and the Youth Sports Trust. Fro m this, the school has been able to provide the opportunity to train 12 girls from Year 8 & Year 9 to become Girls’ Football Activators, promoting and developing the sport at our school and supporting our feeder primary schools through competition. They have taken part in the Game On programme and are working towards the #LetGirlsPlay agenda. Many schools in the partnership have also taken part in the training, however, Macy S in Year 9 has been identified as Bolton’s Game Changer, which means she will be the voice for all young girls in schools, reporting to England Football and trying to grow the game. Lots of exciting things are happening with girls’ football and it’s going to be amazing! GIRLS FOOTBALL GEOGRAPHY GEOGRAPHY THIS TERM... This term has seen some fantastic activities in the Thornleigh Geography Department. Our Year 9 students have been studying global issues, looking at various problems affecting us all on an international stage. One particular issue focussed on was plastic pollution - something all of us can say we have personally seen around us. Our students studied this issue and created some outstanding projects to act as a visual reminder for all that attend Thornleigh that we need to act. Our students also took part in a litter fieldwork task where we evaluated the impact of plastic pollution around school. This will help the Global Leaders team with their project to clean up our local community. This te rm has also seen our Year 13 students complete their final coursework pieces with some outstanding results - Well done to all those involved! We look forward to the summer term with anticipation of the continued excellence we have seen this term across all years. We also urge all Year 7 students to get involved in our Pho-Geographer competition over the Easter break where we will ask for a photograph to show what geography means to them.
