Easter Newsletter 2022

418 SPRING NEWSLETTER 2022 MFL Follow us @tsc_mfl_dep GLOBAL LEADER UPDATE In January, the Global Leaders participated in an amazing workshop held by the wonderful Jacquie Ayre from the Liverpool World Centre. We started off with a talk about current issues in today’s world. This was very informative and helped me and the leaders to broaden our knowledge and understanding of Global Issues. The next task set was, we were given 3 Sustainable Development Goals and you had to trade with other people providing reasons as to why you wanted to get rid of your least important one and discuss how your goal would benefit them. This developed our critical thinking of key issues. We then participated in another activity where we were given 2 items such as a plane ride around the world, a kilo of tomatoes and a swimming pool and we had to rank them in order of their carbon released when made. This was extremely eye-opening. Fina lly, we were split into two groups and ranked all the Sustainable Development Goals into a diamond pyramid, this means that the top 9 were chosen and then ranked! Groups then met back and discussed why the most were important and then as a whole ranked their own pyramid. The session as a whole was very informative, easy to understand and engaging! By Xander Thompson We regularly meet as a group during tutor time and lunch and we are now working on projects within our own school community. We are also supporting the launch of the Turing Scheme projects to Gibraltar and Miami. We are looking forward to meeting Subject Leaders to discuss where the Sustainable Development Goals fit in with our school curriculum. Mrs Lyon has now launched the exciting opportunity for 40 students in Years 9 and 10 to participate in activities within our school community on the Sustainable Development Goals and also on a Global Curriculum. This will culminate in a week-long visit to Miami in June. THORNLEIGH LANGUAGE LEADERS Hola, my name is Liam and I am going to be taking you through what our fabulous Language Leaders have been up to with Señora Lyon and Señor Clarke. Our Language Leaders first had to be brave enough to complete an application form and following our success we regularly have meetings at lunch time. We also get assigned tasks to complete around what it is to be a Language Leader. What have the Language Leaders been up to? Our Language Leaders have talked about what skills you need to become a Teacher of MFL and we have discussed that you need to have patience, enthusiasm and share a love of the subject. As part of our recognised award, we are planning to go into primary schools and teach specific activities and topics linked to the curriculum which we have chosen. Ov erall, the Language Leaders have done a great job with successful communication and great ideas to look forward to. About our Language Leaders We have been given a Spanish Flag badge to identify who we are and to show that we can be proud of our achievements and goals. Liam W 9L iAdios amigo! TURING SCHEME WORLD BOOK DAY IN MFL! ¡Hay un fantasma en el armario! (“there is a ghost in the wardrobe!”). This can only mean that we are once again celebrating World Book Day! This y ear, our Year 7 and 8 students have tapped into their creativity to produce some fantastic Spanish work. As a continuation of our current topic of food, the Year 7s have written recipes for potions to give you any superpower you could possibly imagine. Whether you want to time travel, become invisible or mind-read, our students have got the potion for you. However, think carefully before trying them – are you really prepared to drink half a cup of worms with a dab of mud just to be able to fly? Sin ce our Year 8s have been learning how to describe houses this term, we tasked them with designing their own haunted houses and describing them in Spanish. There were werewolves in kitchens, monsters hiding under beds and witches flying around bathrooms. Are you brave enough to venture inside?
