115 SPRING NEWSLETTER 2022 CONCEPT DESIGNS This term the Design Technology students have been developing their understanding of the how a concept design can evolve into a final outcome. Th ey have been using the brazing hearth gas torch and the low melt metal called Pewter in order to manufacturer their own Pewter cast Designs PHONE HOLDER Many students in Year 9 have also been developing their understanding of Thermo and Thermo Setting plastics via the creation of their very own Acrylic phone holder. CAREERS WITHIN DESIGN TECHNOLOGY / BTEC CONSTRUCTION Not only do students create, design and make within Design Technology we also seek to give all students access to external careers advice. This month we have been blessed with a whole day of careers advice with regards to the Construction industry via Civil Engineering. Plant and Equipment used Who is involved - Jobs available He alth and safety on a building site. O ur appreciation and thanks goes out towards Jim Kampta. HEALTH & SAFETY Health and Safety plays an integral aspect of the BTEC Construction course. It is also invaluable to students to learn how to remain safe on a building site especially if this is going to be an aspect of their chosen career. F1 NEWS We have had a very busy but extremely enjoyable term in F1 Club. Th e two F1 teams have been working really hard during lunch and after school sessions to not only raise the money they need to compete in the competition but have also been raising money for charity whilst still designing, testing and developing their cars using CAD/CAM. Students have used SketchUp, OnShape and TinkerCAD to design their car to meet the strict specification and the 3D Printers to make their car. T he entry class team who are competing in regional finals are: Project Manager: Matthew R Enterprise Lead: Max R Business Lead: Thom D and Tyler H Creative Lead: Amy O CAD Engineer Lead: Oliver M Together they are: Need For Speed Th e Development Class Team who will also be competing in regional finals but are also hoping to make it to the national and world finals are: Project Manager: Joshua L and Amelia G Business and Enterprise Lead: Lewis H CAD Engineer Lead: Joshua L Creative Lead: Tyler M Together they are: Celeritas Both teams are have been working closely with the engineering department at Manchester Metropolitan University who have recently become an F1 Academy. Whilst there they spoke to leading experts in design and engineering and got to test their cars in the wind tunnels and on track. Teams are making their final tweaks ready for regional finals in April where they will compete with forty other teams.
