Easter Newsletter 2022

9513 SPRING NEWSLETTER 2022 HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE YEAR 11 EXAM PREPARATIONS In Year 11 preparations have been underway to support our students sitting external exams in February, with Mrs Hawksworth and Mrs Anthony leading some practical based sessions. In Health and Social care, the students were given the opportunity to use equipment and make readings of their own physiological data. Th is was a fun opportunity to check out their own health scores such as blood pressure, peak flow, BMI and resting pulse rate. We are really excited to have just received lots of new equipment to use in lessons such as an age simulator, alcohol goggles, an anatomical baby and a fat suit. ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TALK On the 7th March we were visited by Ilyas Adam, a Specialist Physiotherapist as part of the department work experience and careers programme. Stu dents attended the event from Year 10 Health and Social Care and our Year 12 Health and Social Care students were joined by some students from the Sport option. The s essions started with an informal talk about the different roles of Allied Health Professionals (AHP) and their role within the NHS and patient recovery. These include Podiatrists, Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Operating Department Practitioners, Orthoptists, Paramedics, Speech and Language Therapists and Diagnostic Radiographers. For Year 12 Health and Social care students this will give them a great insight into future careers that they might want to explore and a practical sense of the expectations for working in the sector, Ilyas explained the path that his training had taken and some details of the day to day role of a Specialist Physiotherapist at the Pikes Lane Centre. The second of the talks was for the Year 10 group and was the chance to hear in person from one of the professionals that they have been looking at as part of their component 2 course work on ‘Health and Social Care Values’. Th ey then had the opportunity to talk with Ilyas about how Allied Health Professionals could support those in the community requiring health care support without having to become an inpatient. He explained the different ways that AHP’s work together to support patients in their recovery and ensure that they get the support needed from additional services. Ily as brought each of the talks to an end by discussing the different careers paths that those wanting to enter a health profession could follow, from apprenticeships to degree level further studies. CHILD DEVELOPMENT In Child Development, students explored a range of different activities that could help a child meet their expected milestones. Students have investigated how they could use different pieces of play equipment to support the learning of young children. They looked at how sand trays, for example, help improve children’s physical development and why play in early year’s is so crucial.
