Catholic Ethos

Thornleigh Salesian College is a Roman Catholic school, as such we have a commitment to ensuring that our faith underpins all that we do in school. We aim to provide an environment which is secure, stable and orderly, based on the Gospel values of love, peace, justice and personal responsibility. All members of the community benefit from being part of the Salesian family, both here in the UK and across the world. This brings unique opportunities which enrich the lives of our young people.

"The extent that pupils contribute to and benefit from the Catholic life of the school is outstanding" – Salford Diocese Section 48 Inspection 2011

The educational approach of St John Bosco and the teachings of the Catholic Church are at the heart of the ethos at Thornleigh Salesian College. The basic principles of St John Bosco’s ‘preventative system’ demonstrate a deep understanding and love for young people and their problems. The acronym ‘RUAH’ represents the intrinsic values of Respect, Understanding, Affection and Humour which form the underlying principles for students, staff and wider community at Thornleigh Salesian College.

"The relationship between the teachers and pupils is based on mutual respect" – Salford Diocese Section 48 Inspection 2011

Students enjoy a school life which is supported by prayer, worship, excellent chaplaincy provision, retreats and regular opportunities to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist.

"The quality of the school’s prayer life is outstanding" – Salford Diocese Section 48 Inspection 2011

In addition, there is system of high quality personalised learning which provide opportunities for all students, at all stages, to achieve their potential be that by excellent academic training or a more vocational approach.

Thornleigh Salesian College works collaboratively with its associated Catholic feeder primary schools and with the other two Catholic secondary schools within the Bolton area.  However,  it should be noted that Thornleigh Salesian College is the only provider of continuous 11-19 years Catholic provision in Bolton.
