Catenian Public Speaking Competition

On Sunday 5th February 2017, Thornleigh Sixth Form re-established our participation in the Catenian Public Speaking Competition.

We had two contestants who had prepared, edited and rehearsed a 4 minute speech to exhibit their ability to keep an audience focussed on a given topic.

Jonathan Wright, our very own Youth MP for Bolton, chose the topic, “All great truths begin as blasphemies”. Ellie Kirkman chose, “It is easier to make war than it is to make peace”. Both students were outstanding on the day and were great representatives of the college. Ellie and Jonathan received some formative feedback and have gained skills that will help them in many areas in the future such as in job interviews and university applications.

Jonathan came second in the competition and won £75 for himself and £50 for the college. We are so proud of such an accomplished and assured speech from a talented young man. We will use the money Jonathan won to buy committee t-shirts and we are hoping both students take an active role in the senior structure. The confidence and resilience needed to compete on this event prove that we have some truly inspirational students at Thornleigh Sixth Form

Next year we are out to challenge for 1st place! Well done Jonathan and Ellie
